If you are following my blog you know this is my first book review for Denise’s Dog Dish. I wanted to write about at least one of Jackie’s books. I’ll start here by saying they are not for children and will tailor the review in case my young readers are reading this. I really couldn’t pick one so I’m going to give a quick run down of both. In her own words Jackie writes Fido-friendly fiction, which is what drew me to her writing in the first place.
“What the Dog Ate” needs to be placed on every summer reading list…and your reading lists in general. Maggie Baxter is a practical, rule-following accountant. She discovers (in a most unusual way) that her husband of seventeen years is cheating on her and it crushes her carefully laid out life plans. She and her Chocolate Lab, Kona, need to come up with a plan B, if she can get through her usual over analyzing and learn to live life more in the moment, like Kona. This book made me laugh, cry and cheer as Maggie puts her life back together with the help of love that comes on 4 legs…with a wet nose. I couldn’t put it down and read it in 3 days.
“Rescue me, Maybe” took me a bit longer, possibly because I wasn’t also on vacation. It starts with the question, “What if you lost your spouse and dog from cancer within weeks of each other but you were sadder about the dog?” This is the question that will haunt Jane Bailey as she struggles through her grief, relationships with her in-laws, mother and friends while struggling to discover what her life plan will be now that it is entirely up to her. While on her journey she’ll meet a stray, but her heart is still in pieces from her recent loss. Will she be able to let a stray into her life?
These books are MUST READS for dog lovers and anyone who likes stories where you are cheering for your heroine to overcome life’s obstacles. Once you pick up one of her books, you will not be able to put it down! I can’t wait for her next book!
