May I Pet Your Dog

May I Pet Your Dog?

I’m a pet owner who is very concerned about the education of children with regards to pets. One of the areas I find very lacking is how many children approach an unknown dog. Stephanie Calmenson, in her book “May I Pet Your Dog” addresses this issue brilliantly. A picture book written for 4-8 year olds where she introduces us to her own dog a dachshund named Harry and lets Harry teach kids how to meet a dog and make friends. Harry explains how to ask the owner first and then how to properly greet a dog. He then introduces you to several of his friends and explains different doggie temperaments, reasons for certain behaviors and that not all doggies will be approachable reminding them to always “ask the owner first”. At the end of the book there are actual photos of Harry along with a short story of how he and Stephanie came to be together. I had already enjoyed Jan Ormerod’s illustrations as they depict each part of the story well and I think will be enjoyable, entertaining and educational for kids. After seeing Harry’s pictures, I was even more impressed since her illustration of Harry so well matches his pictures. I greatly appreciate this book since it teaches such a valuable lesson in a way that will be enjoyable to read many times over.
